How to Become a Veterinary Technician

If you're passionate about veterinary technology, working with healthcare professionals, and taking care of animals, the veterinary technician (vet tech) path may be a great fit for you. There are some skills needed to become a vet tech, as well as common duties you may perform and certain requirements for specific states.

Common Duties2

  • Perform diagnostic tests
  • Administer vaccines and medications
  • Prepare animals for surgery
  • Support veterinarian during surgery or other procedures
  • Care for animals in treatment including monitoring eating habits, trimming claws, bathing, etc.
  • Update animal patient records
  • Clean and organize treatment and exam rooms

Requirements3

  • Earn a degree in Veterinary Technology
  • Get a passing grade on the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE)
  • Complete 16 hours of continuing education for each biennial license renewal
