YTI Career Institute (YTI) offers a Medical Billing and Coding program that can be completed 100% online through the Lancaster, PA campus. The program can be completed in as few as 10 months and graduates earn a diploma. Within the program, students prepare to take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam which is administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), or another coding certification exam of their choice.

While there are different technical careers within the medical field, there are some that appear similar to others. This includes a medical administration job and medical billing and coding. However, there are significant differences between the two.

Responsibilities1:

• Create and send medical claims to insurance companies and patients
• Report accurate information to the insurance company
• Draw up the remaining medical bill and send to the patient
• Follow up on unpaid claims
• Arrange payment plans
• Obtain pre-authorizations
• Review bills
• Confirm eligibility
• Convert patient information into universal medical codes
• Complete data entry

Commonly Required Skills1:

• Proficiency with computers and medical billing software
• Knowledge of insurance guidelines and unfair debt collection practices
• Understanding of primary code classifications (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and HSPCS)
• Communication skills
• Basic bookkeeping and accounting practices

As of July 2021, the average Medical Billing and Coding salary in the United States is roughly $74,600. This salary average incorporates factors such as education, certifications, number of years spent in the field, etc. and does not represent an entry-level salary.
