What Skills Do I Need to Be a Good Administrative Assistant?

Are you really well organized? Everything has a place and all is where it should be? Do you like people and enjoy helping them? A career as an Administrative Assistant could put your natural abilities to excellent use. If you are able to juggle multiple tasks at once and thrive being in charge of a busy, demanding to-do-list, and getting stuff done, you’re right for the role! But even if you can’t check all the boxes now, you can learn what you don’t know.

A company’s day-to-day operations rely heavily on an Administrative Assistant who knows the ins and outs of business administration. To be an Admin Assistant, you would need to possess a unique set of skills that keep things running smoothly. Take a look and see what skills you might already have.

Reliability

You’ll be the glue that holds a business together. You’ll show up every day, on time, and prepared to do good work. People put a lot of faith in you and count on you to deliver with consistency.

Attention to detail

Crossing your t’s and dotting your i’s is essential in this role. It’s fine to create your own ways of doing things, but shortcuts and the easy way out are paths best left untraveled. Everything you do reflects on your boss and the whole company.

Multi-tasking

Between the phone ringing off the hook, never-ending emails, and all of the foot traffic, you’ll need to be comfortable doing more than one task at a time, basically all the time. Think of yourself as the short-order cook of the office, preparing multiple dishes for multiple people, but still dressed in business attire.

Communication

You’ll act as the main point of contact for everyone who comes to the business, from strangers off the street to the C-suite of your company. Being able to communicate well with a wide range of different personalities, education and patience levels, is a must.

Writing

When you’re not on the phone or talking in-person, chances are you’ll be drafting memos, taking meeting notes, or answering emails. Be quick, concise and error-free and you’ll do just fine.
