5 summer pet safety tips
If you love animals, then you know that they are cherished members of a family. Protect your pets from the dangers that come with the hot weather. Keep them safe this summer with these 5 tips:
1. Never Leave them Alone in your Car
Although it can be tempting to run into the grocery store, never leave your pet behind. What starts out as a quick trip, can turn into something longer. On just a warm day, the temperature inside your car can reach over 120 degrees in just a few minutes. Even a cracked window won't give your pet much relief. Instead, leave your pet at home while you do errands.
2. Take it Easy
On very hot days, limit exercise to the early morning and late evening. During the peak hours between 10 and 2 when the sun is highest in the sky, asphalt on roads can get very hot. Dogs sweat primarily through their feet, so walk on the grass when possible. Let your pet cool off and relax in the shade.
3. Keep them Hydrated
Just like you, animals can become dehydrated and overheat. Refill their bowls with fresh, cold water. Never leave them outside without access to water. Watch for signs of heatstroke by monitoring their breathing and behavior. Dogs and cats with short noses can experience a difficult time breathing, especially in extreme heat.
4. Prepare for Storms
Sudden and sometimes violent thunderstorms are common during the summer months and they can cause fear and anxiety for your pet. Make sure you have a plan in place if you leave your pet home alone. For example, many dogs feel more anxious when confined to one space. Allow open access for your dog to enter an open crate or escape to the basement when frightened.
5. Cut Out the Treats
Barbeque food and snacks are fun treats for you, but not for your pets. A change in diet, even a piece of your burger, can cause serious digestive problems. Chocolate, caffeine, avocado, onions, grapes, and raisins are just some of the foods that are poisonous to your pet.
